The Domus Sessoriana is laid out in one wing of the Monastery of the Basilica of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme on the slopes of the Esquiline Hill in central Rome, a short distance from the Colosseum and the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano. The Basilica is built on the site of one of the Imperial palaces, flanked by the Aurelian city Walls, the remains of the Circo Variano and the Anfiteatro Castrense. The Emperor Constantine and his mother Helena inaugurated the first openly Christian church here. This was largely reconstructed in the 12th century, when the bell tower was added, while the present baroque appearance was the work of the early 18th century. Its has been occupied by the Cistercian order since 1561. In the Basilica and Cistercian Monastery guests can meet the Monks and visit Museum and "Cappella del Coro", the 17th century library, the Chapel of St. Helena and the Chapel of the Relics of the Passion. There is a terrace on the top floor with views over the archaeological site, the church of San Giovanni in Laterano and a vista of the City itself. There is a shop near the Basilica with herbal products on sale, along with liqueurs and sweetmeats from various monasteries.
