The village of Rates on the hillside has a splendid eleventh century Romanesque church dedicated to Sao Pedro. It was built by the Benedictine monks for Henry, Count of Burgundy. The coastal road at Povoa de Varzim, about 7 kms away, offers many restaurants specialising in the local fish dishes. There is a Casino which also has international shows, exhibitions and a restaurant.

With a magnificent panoramic view over Póvoa de Varzim and the Atlantic Ocean, the restaurant has simple and sober features, but an exquisit service. The cuisine is very ecletic and offers dishes that vary from the traditional Portuguese food to the sofisticated international cuisine. There is also live music in the restaurant over dinner in the summer.
